#50 Weeks to 50…and so it begins

Why this site, why this post? Well, exactly 50 weeks from today I will be turning 50. Incredibly hard to believe that is true. There is no convincing yourself otherwise…50 is complete adulthood – no childish antics allowed. Ridiculous. That isn’t me. Adulthood reminds me of all the things I always watched my dad do and he certainly can’t be a day over 45, right?

I still have a copy of Tiger Beat tucked away in a drawer (okay, I’m holding on to it because I think it might garner quite the profit on eBay one day); a plethora of toys at my desk (who doesn’t want a two-foot tall Michael Myers that plays the theme to Halloween close by); a Ralph Lauren plaid button-down hanging in my closet from the early 90s that I traded my cousin Brian for because it was exactly like the one Chris O’Donnell wore in “Mad Love” (honestly, I even wore it a couple of days ago); and, until a few weeks ago, my prize 1994 Saab Turbo Convertible in my garage (won’t go into that too much now.  Still too painful). See, it must be 1995, 1996 maybe?

Undoubtedly, we must start preparing for the fated Y2K!

Alas, there it was about a year and a half ago…the Matt McCoy AARP commercial.  For the mass majority of television watchers who either forwarded through their DVR show or simply didn’t even pay attention to what was on the screen, let me tell you – seeing the steel-blue eyed, handsome, college frat boy nemesis of Tim Robbins & Cameron Dye in “Fraternity Vacation” caused quite the shock. Wait a minute, didn’t I just see him on “The Love Boat” last week?

Truth be told, I do still watch “The Love Boat” reruns on MeTV every Sunday and it is television gold, so I probably did see his episode pretty recently. But, I digress.

The real question is how could Matt McCoy be old enough to promote AARP? And, if he is promoting AARP, how old must Tim Robbins and Cameron Dye be? (Had to look it up but the answer is: 58 & 57) And, if they are that old, how old am I? It was then that the realization began to sink in. I have probably already lived 1/2 my life. No more, “what do I want to be when I grow up?” I guess I actually am grown-up.

So, with one eye closely keeping the last 50 years in my sights (after all, so far my life experiences are awesome) and one weary, slant-eye glimpse into the next 50 years, I want to document the important things that made me who I am today, while making sure I stop every single day and remember…you ain’t getting any younger. Want to finally take that class, visit a state I’ve never been to or get rid of the prom dress in the closet? The time is now! And, that is what this site/journal/blog is meant to be. Who I am and who I want to be; what I’ve done and still hope to accomplish – the whole shebang. I hope to challenge myself a bit, remember all the fun and plan for an excellent next 1/2 of my life. So, let the countdown begin and let’s see what not only this next 50 weeks, but the next 50 years bring! #50Weeksto50

*Footnote to every single person reading this: I know you don’t know who Cameron Dye is.  For reference, he played Nicolas Cage’s best friend in “Valley Girl”. And, if you don’t know “Valley Girl” you have no point in being my friend. However, if you learn the soundtrack, you might win a trivia quiz and I’ll buy you a plane ticket to New York.
